Chapter 5

Red

Alright Red, here goes nothing. I know I gotta sell this to Lord and the rest of the club, I gotta convince them that what Crow is about to say isn’t batshit crazy, even though I’m having a hard time believing it myself.

“C’mon, Crow,” I encourage him with a sunny smile. “Tell everyone what you told me.”

Crow spits on the ground near his feet. “I’ll talk when I’m ready, bitch.”

“Crow, watch your mouth,” his cousin snarls.

Crow scowls around at the crowd, obviously uncomfortable and out of his element. I feel sorry for him, but I don’t feel bad about riding off on my own and bringing him back to warn the others. I knew the risk I was running, and in my mind, the danger is worth it since it’s the best thing for the club—and for Ryder.

“Well?” Lord prompts, sounding a little impatient now.

“Fine, Jesus fucking Christ,” Crow frowns. “Yeah, I saw the thing that attacked Ryder. I saw Ryder getting tailed by these Cartel guys and decided to follow after them just in case shit hit the fan. This fucking Cartel guy, I thought he was on ‘roids or something, because he was running as fast as a car. Like, seriously, no regular human should be able to run that fast.”

I nod at Crow with a reassuring smile, then glance over at Ryder. So far, Crow’s story and Ryder’s are lining up, and there’s no way that Lord won’t see that . With this, Lord won’t have any reason to give Ryder the cold shoulder. I mean, if I saw what Crow and Ryder had seen, I wouldn’t be sure if anyone would believe me either.

“And this guy,” Crow continues, ducking his head and dragging his feet along the floor. “He…he fucking explodes out of his own skin. Shit, that’s the only way I know how to describe it. It’s like his entire body rips apart, and then suddenly there’s this massive wolf on the road.”

“What?” Lord asks, echoed by Ace and several of the other club members.

“Crow, leave it,” Ryder snaps, marching up to us.

“Wait, Ryder, please,” I beg, stepping in between the cousins. “We’re just… he’s just trying to help. Please, just let him finish. You need to hear this too, hear what happened to you.”

“I know what fucking happened!” Ryder yells. “I WAS THERE!”

Let me tell you, I’ve never heard a man yell like that. Loud, angry, raging —but his voice was also full of fear and pain. It hits me for the first time just how terrifying it must have been to be there, knocked off his bike and pinned to the ground under such a horrifying, inhuman creature.

I know the feeling. Fuck, do I remember that feeling. My ex-husband shoving me to the ground and looming over me with a broken beer bottle, screaming that he’s going to finally jab it into my throat this time and end my stupid crying once and for all. During those last few months when things truly went crazy, that man wasn’t even human anymore.
